Is your microwave broken?

No appliance lasts forever and unfortunately – your microwave isn’t an exception to that rule. In many instances, the microwave is your kitchen’s MVP. Losing it or having it malfunction can create far deeper problems for you than just not being able to nuke hot pockets.

Sadly, there comes a time for every microwave and we’re here today to tell you what the signs might be that that time may be coming sooner rather than later. Let’s jump right in.

It’s over 10 years old

Most modern appliances have a finite lifespan. Microwaves last about a decade although there are instances where some have lasted longer. Still, today’s microwaves are more efficient than ever before and taking the plunge may end up saving you a lot of money on your energy bills in the long run. So if your microwave is over 10 years old, it might be time for a new one.

Strange smells or.. Something else

This is the clearest possible sign that your microwave is cooked for good. When you start smelling odd odors and especially if you see sparks or smoke; then it’s definitely time to get a new microwave. At the very least – it’s time to stop using the old one because it can turn into a potential fire hazard. Don’t take that chance!

Strange noises

Microwaves are famous for their low hums, but when you hear things like buzzing, rattling and grinding noises – it’s a surefire indicator that there’s a problem. While sometimes these symptoms can be the result of something minor – most of the time they’re not. Depending on how much you paid to begin with, it might be time to start considering the cost of a new one.

Food isn’t heating up

Unfortunately, when a microwave stops heating food – there aren’t many repairs that can be done that would make it worth it.
