Why does my ice smell and taste funny?

One of the best inventions of the late 25th century was the ice maker on the exterior of the fridge. There’s nothing easier than just grabbing your ice for your beverage and being on your way. But sometimes, you might notice that the ice might taste funny. Or even – smell funny.

Why does this happen? Is there something wrong? Should you call someone to come look at your fridge? Today, we’re here to help answer those questions. Here’s what you should do if your refrigerator’s ice tastes or smells funny. Let’s jump right in.

Brand new refrigerators

Any time you buy a new fridge with this feature we definitely recommend you give it a few days before using it. Most of the time, new fridges will produce ice that doesn’t taste so great or smells weird and that’s simply due to the fact that the ice maker hasn’t had a chance to flush completely yet. Run it for a few days and after a little while, things will be normal.

Dump out older cubes

Not everyone uses ice at the same rate – and old ice can both taste funny and can taste a little like freezer burn. If this is the case, dump your ice in the sink, wash out your trey and simply make a new batch of ice. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed.

Absorption

You might not believe it – but sometimes ice can absorb odors from your food. This can seep into the ice in your freezer and can even sometimes cause your running water in your ice maker to smell a little too. Just make sure you avoid putting smelly food in your fridge to begin with – but this is best helped by just making sure you’re properly sealing the containers that you’re using.

Aging water filter

Sometimes your water filter simply needs to be replaced. Don’t worry about any kind of contaminants being in there – that won’t adversely impact the quality of the water from a health standpoint – but it certainly can from a smell and taste standpoint. Try to get your filter changed every six months or so. And as an addendum – certain models are a little bit more complex than others – so changing the filter may require the assistance of a pro.

Cleaning out your ice maker module

Cleaning out the module is a must – at least once a year. This is a pretty easy do-it-yourself bit – as you can access the module in the back of the freer and it can be cleaned with a simple vinegar and water solution. In many cases, you can remove the entire bin and wash it yourself. Just like anything that deals with water – it can develop mildew over time – so make sure you’re doing your part to keep it clean.
