Troubleshooting unusual sounds coming from your fridge

While we all wish things were a little bit easier with our refrigerators, they do – from time to time – malfunction. Usually the first sign is through unusual noises and sounds. Today, we’re going to dive into the different kinds of sounds a fridge might be making so as to help you troubleshoot some of potential issues that might be occurring.

The first thing you’ll want to do regardless of the noise is to identify what kind of noise it actually is. Is it grinding? Humming? Buzzing? Is the fridge vibrating? What’s really going on will be dependent on these sorts of things.

Humming

Humming sounds usually come from the compressor. Basically the compressor circulates coolant throughout your refrigerator to keep a nice, consistent temperature. Truth be told – a healthy compressor should always be making some sort of humming noise but if it seems unusually loud it’s definitely a telltale sign something’s wrong. And when something’s wrong, it’s time to call an appliance repair pro.

Grinding noises

Grinding noises almost always come from the condenser fan motor. The condenser helps to circulate air around the fridge and keeps coolant from overheating. They’re almost always located in the back half of the fridge. First thing you’ll want to do is check for any debris or blockage in the blades. If the bearings are wearing out and getting ready to fail. You may hear that grinding noise. If you hear the grinding noise, call a pro!

Buzzing

Whenever your fridge buzzes it’s usually because of the evaporator fan. The telltale sign here is that when you open the door to your fridge, you’ll notice the buzz getting considerably louder. If your evaporator an motor is causing the noise, it’ll need to be professionally replaced.

Vibrations and rattling

If your fridge is vibrating it’s usually your compressor. Like we said above, the compressor keeps your fridge consistently cool and is a vital component of your refrigerator’s ability to stay thoroughly cooled. When it’s vibrating, that usually means something’s either flat out broken inside the compressor. So be sure to make sure you immediately call a pro.
