Unorthodox tips for maintaining your dishwasher
Dishwashers can be mercurial appliances – straight forward and dependable most of the time, but cranky and glitchy at others. It’s fair to say that it’s not too difficult to keep your dishwasher running like new, but then again, it’s not so simple, either.
At the end of the day, you need to treat your dishwasher like any other appliance and make sure that you’re doing what you need to be doing from a maintenance standpoint every few months. Here are some tips that will help you keep your dishwasher in tip top shape and keep your problems to a minimum. Let’s jump right in.
Use it
This might sound silly, but the best way to keep your dishwasher running like a top is making sure that you’re using it regularly. This will prevent food and other detritus from building up over time; and therefore making it more difficult to clean. Use your dishwasher consistently.
Vinegar
Vinegar is a dishwasher’s best friend. Pour a few cups in the bottom and run it on low for an easy, highly effective cleaning cycle. In addition, vinegar can be a fantastic cleaning agent for the washer’s exterior if it’s stainless steel.
Replacing racks
Make sure that if your racks are beginning to peel or wear off, that you should get them replaced quickly. The problem here is that the little ‘hats’ that cover the tines can peel off along with the plastic. The small rusty metal pieces can corrode as well, and can get into your washer’s pump and cause some really expensive issues. So if your rack is looking long in the tooth, get it replaced.
Poking
Yeah, you read that right. Use a small needle or paper clip to poke the holes on the spinning arms that spray water. Many times, food and other materials can get on the spinner and clog up the holes where water is supposed to come out. This can limit water usage, cause backup and lead to less clean dishes – causing you to run your dishwasher yet again. Simply take a small safety pin or needle and lightly poke the whole where the water comes out and you’ll be able to clear out any buildup that might exist.
Hopefully these tips will help you get more out of your dishwasher. Simply keeping up on the day-to-day will pay major dividends when all is said and done.
